We have always been told to go see the dentist twice each year for a preventative check up on our oral care. We go get an annual physical exam from our primary care physician to assess our general systemic health.

You know the drill: During your annual visit, your primary care physician will order a assess your organ health, height, weight, and blood labs such as a cholesterol test. The results of your annual physical will provide your physician with the information she needs to make a recommendation. If the results are positive, you might hear: “You’re doing great, keep doing what you’ve been doing!” If the results are unfavorable, then you’re more likely to be told you need to change your eating habits, start taking blood pressure or diabetes medication, or make other lifestyle changes.

Your Movement System

What about your movement system; the body. The muscles and joints that you use daily? How is your body functioning?

Over time, high cholesterol can cause fatty deposits to form in your arteries, putting you in a high-risk category for heart disease and stroke. Similarly, the cumulative effects of poor posture, balance problems or a muscular imbalance, can take a toll on your body and inhibit your ability to move properly and safely. That’s where a physical therapist comes in: Annual Physical Therapy checkups can catch the musculoskeletal problems that put you at risk for injury, falls or limit your ability to function throughout your life.

An Inside Look at Your Musculoskeletal System

An annual physical therapy checkup gives you an inside look at your musculoskeletal system. Our physical therapists see too many patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions that could have easily been prevented if they had been addressed earlier in life. Too often we hear “why didn’t someone tell me about this sooner” or “if I had known I would live this long I would have taken better care of myself” Muscles tighten, joints stiffen up, and the body compensates. Your body will naturally take the path of least resistance. If you have a joint that is not moving correctly, your body will compensate by increasing joint motion at another joint, which can easily cause a host of problems down the road such as degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, tendinopathies, falls, etc
